Winch ratings are misleading. A winch rating of 10,000lb means that it can pull 10,000lbs with 1 layer on the drum but when you get to 4 layers it is down to 6,100lbs of force. Normal min which size for a Jeep is 8,000lbs. Check out Titan winches. They have very good prices and a few people in the club have them and like them.

Superwinch is often advertised cheap. I think larger capacities are advertised periodically in Cdn tire and TSC. I have looked at them, the overall component quality matches the pricing. Titan is Canadian, check out the items for sale section.
Think of the investment. If you want long term reliability :?: To me the winch is something I would be disappointed in myself if it failed me when I needed it. Just like my tools, I use the good ones, the cheap ones are just taking up space in the box. I am really looking at the titan for myself. I have compared to other brands and I like the titan features for the money. Get a cover for when not in use. Think about a 9 to 12K winch size. Anchor it well. Be satisfied when it pulles you out because that is when it really pays for itself. Just my opinion. :!:

I think Titan winches are made in China. They are good value for the money but if you are talking quality Warn is the one you want.

I am sorry, did not mear to mislead. China eh? I really got the impresssion from the video they were cdn developed and built. No question of the warn quality, you do pay for the quality but as my previous opinion you do want the quality when you need to use the winch. Thanks for the china info on titan, I will look at them more closely, I did get the 1st view impression they were more securely built than some of the offshore brands available. I better do more homework. Thanks, Pete

I've only had my Titan for a year and it was used when I bought it. Duncan (distributor of Titan) seems to be standing behind the product and everyone on Jeepkings seems to be very happy with his product.

I am not knocking the Titan product. In fact I bought one myself last month based on feedback from Nimmer and others. I was going to go brand name in the hope I was buying reliability as a winch is there to get you home when all else fails but at less than ½ the price of a similar Warn product I decided to roll the dice and hope the Titan serves me well. I don’t have any experiences to share yet as I haven’t installed it.

I like the coated rope concept of the "master-pull" brand, see cable vs rope article inwheel&off-road april 2010 issue.
Also that issue a buyers guide article, it does not talk titan brand. however I still like the winch talk video info titan puts on the internet and I like the titan (even as I was incorrect about the cdn origin, sorry)
My bottom line is i like a big pound titan combined with a master-pull coated rope and a weather cover.

I personally go with the recovery strap. Since it seems like everyone I wheel with has a winch, the strap is SO much cheaper.
